Out of frustration with the lack of an index for Susan Sontag's book of essays, On Photography, I typed up the collection into a searchable text document and learned to make an index using The Chicago Manual of Style.
In constructing the recognizable form of an index and removing it from the context of the book, I wanted to find a way to see a particular picture of photographic history and its theorization, and consider both the elicitations and limitations generated by this type of structured knowledge.
